Hello, I am Gavin Booth!

About Me

I am a soon to be University of Lethbridge graduate with a background in Computer Science, Music Theory, and Mathematics with a lifelong passion for problem-solving, discovery, and precision.

My goal is to develop and manage software that advances scientific research, particularly in astronomy, physics and aerospace, though my interests extend into the many facets of software design and application.

Driven by an insatiable curiosity, I thrive on understanding complex systems - whether it’s decoding the universe’s mysteries, mastering a new language or solving intricate puzzles.

Key Skills and Strengths

Analytical Thinking and Puzzle Solving: Many years of experience with logic-based challenges like Mathdoku, Speed-Cubing, and origami have honed my ability to break down complex problems into manageable steps.

Technical Expertise: Proficient in C++, Python, C, LaTeX, FAUST audio, Racket, Prolog, PHP, SQL, and scientific analysis frameworks such as NumPy & Scikit-Learn.

Mathematical Prowess: A robust understanding and practice with practical applications of complex mathematical concepts including Single, Multivariable, Vector, and Tensor Calculus, Linear and Abstract Algebra, Micro and Macro Economics and Astrophysics.

Creative and Musical Background: With over 20 years of experience in music theory, piano, and trumpet performance - including original compositions - I bring a unique blend of structure and creativity to my work. Understanding the beauty of simplicity, the excitement of interlaced individuality, and the importance of cohesiveness.

Detail-Oriented and Efficient: Whether developing code, analyzing data, or fine-tuning a new skill, I approach every task with precision and focus.

Linguistic Curiosity: Self-taught the Japanese language for over four years, with a class through the Univeristy, demonstrates dedication, self-motivation, and adaptability managing to have gained a substantial fluency and comprehension of the language and culture.

Aspiring Game Developer: Actively exploring video game design, starting with engine creation and tinkering with mechanics and systems.

Aerospace: A long-standing facination with aerophysics, aircraft, and piloting drives my desire to contribute to research that explores flight dynamics, orbital mechanics, the nature of the universe, and pushing the boundaries of human exploration.

Team Player, Blunt but Caring: Honest communication paired with genuine desire to support and uplift those around me allows for education and elightenment of myself and my peers. I prefer to forgo small talk and instead focus on deep meaniful topics and connections.

Family

While my mind is always busy solving puzzles or exploring new ideas, my heart belongs to my family. I am a devoted husband and proud father of two brilliant young children as well as two curious and troublesome cats who provide comfort and entertainment during difficult projects and late-night coding sessions.

Challenging family dynamics with relatives has given me many opprotunities to work on communication strengths, de-escalation of sensitive situations, and boundary setting skills. Balancing family life with my professional pursuits keeps me grounded and inspired to be the best I can be.

What Drives Me

I am constantly seeking the underlying truths of complex systems - whether it is the mechanics of astrophysical phenomena, the dynamics of human behaviour, or the intricate balance of a complicated musical composition. I believe the best solutions emerge when we question assumptions and persue knowledge relentlessly.
